For two decades, I’ve had the privilege of waking up every day to do work I love — work that is politically active, deeply connected to the construction industry, and rooted in service to the people of Maine. After all these years, I still feel blessed. What I do is not just a job; it’s a calling, a responsibility and a gift.
In a world where the headlines can make us feel divided or discouraged, my recent trip to Washington, D.C., reminded me of something far more true and far more powerful. I saw thousands of people — families, students, veterans, tourists from every corner of the world — pouring into our nation’s capital with pride, curiosity and admiration. They weren’t arguing. They weren’t divided. They were celebrating America. They were celebrating us! And it reminded me that, despite what you might hear on TV or read in the newspapers, we are doing okay. More than okay. We are strong, resilient and united by more than we are divided.
That same spirit lives in the Maine chapter of ABC. After celebrating our 40th anniversary last year, I honestly wonder how we can possibly top such a milestone. But we will.
Out of 67 ABC chapters across the country, Maine is currently ranked #2 in the nation for member retention and #4 in the nation for membership growth. These achievements don’t happen by accident. They happen because of dedicated, passionate, forward-thinking people who care deeply about this industry and this state.
Our volunteer leaders are the backbone of this association. They are at the helm, guiding us with intention and integrity. Their strategic planning and thoughtful decision making do not go unnoticed. When I attend our annual President’s meetings, I am reminded time and again of the unwavering support the Maine Board of Directors provides. They set ambitious goals and then stand shoulder to shoulder with our team to achieve them. That is leadership. That is partnership. That is pride.
Henry Ford once said, “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.”
I see this firsthand daily with the dynamic team I work with.
Shari Johnston, our Workforce Development Director, continues to elevate our apprenticeship program with unmatched dedication. She delivered our first ever Safety Summit this year and has expanded our Young Professionals program to over 100 future leaders across Maine. Along with the successful annual Craft Championship, her work is shaping the next generation of our industry.
Penney Ward, our Membership Director, is unstoppable. She continues to grow our membership, build relationships and orchestrate events our members rave about. Meet the Generals came back earlier this year with huge success, and our spring and fall golf tournaments sell out within hours … every time!
Now, we are thrilled to welcome Madison Philbrick to the team. She will continue making an impact through marketing and development — supporting membership, strengthening workforce initiatives and bringing fresh energy and creativity to the chapter. She completes our team of four, and we couldn’t be more excited!
Together, we are stronger. Together, we are building something that matters.
After 20 years, I still feel humbled by the opportunity to serve this chapter, this industry and this state. Every member, every volunteer, every partner — you are the reason I love what I do. You are the reason we continue to grow, to lead and to shine.
It is, and always will be, a gift to serve you.
